A heat warning has been issued across the Metro Vancouver region as a mini heat wave approaches.
For the next four days Environment Canada is expecting "significant" heat. For coastal areas of the region that means highs of 29 C and lows not dropping below 16 C. Some coastal areas may reach up to 35 C.
Further inland the mercury will go even higher.
"Daytime highs ranging from 34 to 38 C combined with overnight lows of 17 to 20 C," states the federal agency in its warning for Surrey, Langley, Coquitlam and Maple Ridge.
A ridge of high pressure is developing today, Aug. 10, and will peak on Thursday, Aug. 12, and Friday, Aug. 13.
"The duration of this heat wave is expected to last at least three days, and little relief is expected at night with elevated overnight temperatures. These hotter than normal temperatures will increase the potential for heat-related illnesses," states Environment Canada.
They caution people about activities during the heat and encourage people to check on elderly and vulnerable friends and family and make sure they stay cool and drink water.
They're also reminding people not to leave pets in vehicles.
"Environment Canada and local Medical Health Officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat and are advising the public to take precautions."
