While value is really only determined by how much someone is willing to pay, some Vancouver Craigslist sellers could stand to increase their prices based on similar items being sold elsewhere.
We took a look at a few current Craigslist ads and compared them with similar items elsewhere on the market to see just how much the sellers could be missing out on - or how much of a bargain their listings offer buyers.
First up is a couple of antique Tonka toys being sold out of Surrey. The listing says the race car is to be sold for $5 and the motorcycle for $10.
The car aside, a used but slightly better looking Japanese-made, diecast motorcycle of the same make and model has been listed on eBay for $109.06
Also coming from Japan is this antique jewelry box, which when cranked plays music and turns a rickshaw’s wheel. The listing, also from Surrey, is asking $45 for the box and says it is in relatively good condition.
There are many factors that could affect asking prices and cause a collector to pay extra but multiple listings on eBay for similar boxes ask for between $200 and $350.
Another unique item being sold on Vancouver’s Craigslist page is a vintage hygrothermograph, a tool used to measure temperature and relative humidity over the cycle of days, nights, and seasons. The seller doesn’t know if the machine is working but is still asking $90 for it.
Several other vintage hygrothermographs can also be found for sale online and again, their prices vary on the basis of their age, condition and rarity, but they can range from $150 to over $1,000.
One seller from Surrey knows exactly what his Pulsar 3 watch is worth though. The listing says the watch comes complete with the original module functions, new batteries and the original stainless steel pulsar case. The watch, along with its box of accessories, is going for $1,200.
The watch dates back to 1974 and is one of the first digital watches ever made. Because of this technological first, it stands to reason it was worn by James Bond in Live and Let Die, only adding to its collectability.
That exact watch was sold in March last year to the tune of $1,499.
