Vancouver Police apprehend high-risk sex offender who didn't return to halfway house

Authorities in Vancouver have arrested a high-risk sex offender who failed to return to his halfway house last Tuesday night.

UPDATE: July 8, 2019 - The VPD have reported the arrest of Jonathan Cardinal. "Just before midnight on July 7, two uniformed officers noticed Cardinal walking in the Downtown Eastside. Cardinal initially provided officers with a false name, however he was arrested after officers discovered his identity," explain police via a media release. Cardinal is currently in custody.

Authorities in Vancouver are searching for a high-risk sex offender who failed to return to his halfway house Tuesday night.

Jonathan Cardinal, 29, is a federal sex offender who is now wanted on a Canada-wide warrant after not meeting curfew the night of July 2.

Vancouver Police say Cardinal is "currently serving a long-term supervisory order following two violent sexual assaults in 2010."

Cardinal is a 5'8" tall, 165-pound Indigenous male. He has short brown hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on his upper back, and was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt, blue jeans, white sneakers, a backpack and black-rimmed eye glasses, describe the VPD.

Anyone who sees Cardinal, or knows of his whereabouts, is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
