Kitsilano Pool 'cannot be operated safely,' will remain closed for summer 2024

Repairs are being made to the aging pool to try to extend its lifespan.

Kitsilano Pool won't open for the summer of 2024 due to leaks, according to the Vancouver parks board.

Kitsilano's iconic outdoor pool will not open this summer.

The pool, which has been open for more than 50 years, is losing too much water due to leaks; last winter inspectors found that while operational the pool spilled an estimated 30,000 litres of water every hour.

Repairs have been made, but leaks are still happening.

"The pool is still losing a substantial amount of water, making it impossible to balance pool chemicals," states the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation in a press release. "Vancouver Coastal Health has confirmed that the pool cannot be operated safely in its current state."

As the aging pool will be closed for the summer, repairs will continue.

"The extended closure will allow staff to fully investigate the ongoing water loss and make the needed repairs to the underground piping and basin required to extend the facility’s useful life," reads the press release.

"Staff also plan to install a custom liner which is expected to extend the life of the pool."

Previously the parks board had announced the popular pool near Kitsilano Beach would reopen.

Hours will be extended at Second Beach Pool to help mitigate the impact on regular users.

Despite having issues last summer, the pool opened for a couple of months.
