Majority of Vancouver residents still waiting for promised ICBC 'gas relief' rebate

The cheques are in the mail, they said. Locals beg to differ.

Vancouver Is Awesome polled readers to determine how many residents in the city were still waiting for the ICBC "gas relief" rebate promised in March for B.C. drivers.

It's been about three weeks since Glacier Media checked in with the B.C. government and ICBC to find out when drivers in the province could expect to see the promised "gas relief" rebates show up in their accounts or mailbox.

At the time, in early July, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General indicated ICBC had issued "all 25,000 rebates to customers who signed up for direct deposit" and that all 573,000 credit card rebates had been issued to eligible ICBC customers.

When it comes to rebates by cheque, the ministry indicated they had begun to issue those payments in June and were continuing to process rebates at a pace of about 200,000 per week.

The auto insurer said 3.5 million rebates would be sent out, totalling more than $396 million.

The rebate, in the amount of $110 per customer with "a basic auto insurance policy" valid in February 2022, was created as a one-time relief in the wake of soaring gas prices.

Just over two weeks after the ministry provided the update and it seems a majority of B.C. drivers living in Vancouver still have not seen the rebate. A total of 58.5 per cent of local readers polled indicated they are still waiting for their rebate, while just 20.95 per cent had received their "gas relief" rebate by mail.

A small number of voters in the poll indicated they had received a rebate via direct deposit or credit card refund.

Vancouver Is Awesome polled 827 of our readers and asked the question: Have you received your ICBC 'gas relief' rebate yet?

The poll ran from 7/21/2022 to 7/26/2022. Of the 827 votes, we can determine that 401 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Yes, mine was directly deposited/refunded to me 13.47 % local, 11.37 % total
Yes, I received a cheque in the mail from ICBC 20.95 % local, 19.59 % total
No, I'm still waiting 58.35 % local, 62.64 % total
