After complaints from the public via email and social media, the Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) handed out more than 330 tickets to people driving in bus lanes.

In Vancouver alone more than 200 tickets were handed out over two days during the campaign that took place in June, according to a press release from the transit-focused police force. On one other day 89 tickets were issued in Surrey and Delta, and another 34 issued on a fourth day in Richmond and Pitt Meadows.

Of the tickets issued, 268 were specifically for drivers in bus lanes (a $109 fine). An additional 66 were issued for other offences at the same time, including distracted driving and driving without a license.

On Reddit the police force notes that of the 66 additional tickets, 12 were for using electronic devices while driving, 14 were for speeding, four were for there being no license plate and one was for no seatbelt.

MVTP officers also dealt with two impaired drivers who were on the road during a Thursday commute, notes the transit police force.

"In addition to keeping transit vehicles moving, safety is always a goal when we enforce proper use of bus lanes," says the MVTP's Sgt. Steve Newton in the release.

Police are advising drivers to remind themselves of the laws regarding to bus lanes and HOV lanes.

"If you drive an electric vehicle, you are eligible to drive in SOME reserved lanes. Electric vehicles are NOT permitted in bus lanes," notes the MVTP.
