Macleans has released its annual ranking of the most dangerous places in Canada and many of them are located in British Columbia.

Based on Statistics Canada data, the Canadian news magazine features an interactive ranking tool that allows residents to see how their community ranks. Categories include everything from fraud to youth crime to impaired driving, and the data is pulled from the Crime Statistics Index (CSI). The CSI includes all police-reported crime in 2018, which is the most recent year with data available.

The Violent Crime Severity Index uses a number of metrics in order to determine a location's ranking. The index is broken into four major categories: Homicide, Assault & Bodily Harm; Theft & Property Crime; Drug Offences; and Youth Crime. From there, each of the categories is broken down into sub-categories.

The most violent crime was found in Thompson, Man., which Macleans reports has a high degree of youth crime. Further, it notes that the city also has a prevalence of sexual assaults and fire arms offences.

North Battleford, Sask came in second, with Portage La Prairie, Man. in third. Prince Albert and area, Sask. and Quesnel, B.C. rounded out the top five.

Seven of the 20 most violent places in Canada are located in B.C. According to the All Crime Index, B.C. has nine of the 20 most dangerous places in Canada.
