Most outdoor pools opening soon, lifeguards returning to Vancouver beaches

One of Vancouver's most popular outdoor pools won't open yet, as hoped.

Vancouverites looking for a place to swim this weekend will have a couple more options.

Both New Brighton and Second Beach pools will open on Saturday, May 18; those looking to book swim times can do so starting May 15.

Meanwhile Maple Grove pool will open on June 15. The Hillcrest Aquatic Centre pools (indoor and outdoor) will open on July 1 after maintenance is wrapped up.

Kitsilano Pool will not be opening immediately, despite earlier statements from Vancouver parks board staff that efforts were being made to open the old and damaged pool on time. The city notes the pool is in its "end-of-life phase with many failing and deteriorating components."

"Kitsilano Pool will not open on May 18 because of unforeseen repairs," reads the city's website. "The dry weather necessary for the repairs only arrived recently, causing a delay in opening the pool at the same time as Second Beach Pool and New Brighton Pool."

Repairs are ongoing at the pool with a target of opening in early June.

"We recognize that the pool holds a special place in the hearts of Vancouverites as an iconic facility, synonymous with summer," states the parks board in a press release. "Staff are doing everything they can to open the pool when it is safe to do so and are committed to providing updates on any further delays."

May 18 marks the beginning of lifeguard patrols at city beaches as well (along with concessions). The following beaches will see life guards on duty:

  • English Bay
  • Jericho
  • Kitsilano
  • Locarno
  • Spanish Banks East and West
  • Sunset
  • Second
  • Third

Life guards will be on duty at city beaches from noon to 8:30 p.m. each day. Areas with lifeguards on duty are marked by red and yellow flags.

Spray parks are already open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at:

  • Connaught Park
  • CRAB Park at Portside
  • Harbour Green Park
  • Grandview Park
  • Hastings Park
  • Oak Park
  • Prince Edward Park
  • Pandora Park
  • Norquay Park
  • sθәqәlxenәm ts'exwts'áxwi7

Two others, at Maclean and Garden parks, will open in the next week.

Most city-run wading pools will open between July 1 and 4 and will run until Sept. 1. The Clifton Park wading pool won't open until August 12. The city has a list of what days and times each pool is open, which varies.

Outdoor pool schedules

Public swim times at the Second Beach and New Brighton pools are broken into four two-and-a-half hour blocks with half-an-hour in between from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (Second Beach Pool won't open until noon Monday to Fridays).

New Brighton will be open early on work days from 7 to 8:30 a.m. for people to swim lengths.

To sign up for swim times, locals need to register through the city's Showpass system.
