Two models of cars seem to be the most popular in the Lower Mainland, according to ICBC's annual statistics.

Sure, Vancouver might feel like a town of Teslas but the EV isn't the car that defines our city - at least not according to ICBC's annual vehicle population stats.

The insurance corporation tracks data regarding the make and model of every vehicle registered in the province and according to the 2022 numbers, there are a lot of Teslas cruising around Lower Mainland roads (34,884 actually) - but it's not the most common car.

In the Lower Mainland, the most common make of car is Toyota with 136,053 of them on the road and the most common model is a Honda Civic LX 4DR (20,076 registered).

Within the Vancouver city limits there are a grand total of 316,073 vehicles registered; 26,822 of them are Toyotas with the most popular model being a Corolla CE 4DR, just edging out the popularity of the Honda Civic (3,419).

The Toyota Honda favouritism hasn't changed much over the years. ICBC's 2019 records showed more than 35 different types of Corollas in the Lower Mainland and around 60 Civics clinching the top spots.

Vancouverites, it would seem, also have a love of trucks: In terms of luxury cars, the most popular make for 2022 was BMW but in the truck/van category (10,864).

The next most popular luxury vehicle make was Mercedes-Benz (10,843) followed by regular BMWs and truck/van Mercedes. Next was the aforementioned Tesla--the 13th most popular car in Vancouver.

Cool, rare, interesting cars you might see in Vancouver

There are 198 Ferarris in Vancouver, 166 Masaratis, 123 Rolls Royces, 94 Aston Martins, 80 Lamborghinis, and 47 Mclarens.

But if you're really looking out for a cool car, there's only one DeLorean. There is also reportedly a London Taxi somewhere in Vancouver, plus a Vauxhall and three amphibious vehicles registered for personal use.

On average, Vancouver cars are pretty new with the majority having been purchased in the last decade; 2021, 2022, and 2019 were the top three model years. More interestingly, however, there are two cars from 1912 registered, one from 1911, one from 1910, one from 1909, and two from 1908, making the oldest car registered in Vancouver last year 115 years old.
