A Richmond Burger King allegedly sold two mouldy sandwiches to the public this past weekend.
Roxanna Hou, who works nearby the Burger King on Sea Island Way, bought two sandwiches on Saturday morning and said it was a “very disgusting” discovery when mould was found on her food.
“At first, I smelled something strange, but I ate half of it already. And then I looked under the bread and it was filled with mould,” said Hou, adding her manager luckily checked her sandwich before taking a bite to find mould that was “drastically worse” than hers.
“For a fast food chain store, this is very unacceptable for serving this kind of food to customers. People can definitely get sick from this.”
Hou told the Richmond News she made several calls to the store, but they were left unanswered.
She also reported the incident to Vancouver Coastal Health’s restaurant and food safety department, who has yet to provide any updates.
The News has also reached out to VCH for comment, but did not receive a response prior to publication.
In an unrelated incident, the same Burger King also experienced a minor fire on Sunday, May 1.
Richmond Fire-Rescue (RFR) crew received a call around 7:50 a.m. about “a possible fire” at the Richmond fast food joint at 8575 Sea Island Way.
According to Clay Adams, spokesperson for the City of Richmond, RFR crew found heavy black smoke coming from a cooking grill vent.
“RFR was able to contain the fire within the cooking hood by working from the roof and within the building,” said Adams.
“Despite challenges associated with grease trap incidents, the fire was successfully extinguished.”
No injuries to the firefighters or the public were reported.
The News also reached out to the Burger King restaurant, but the call went unanswered.
