It's the most spooktacular month of the year and the perfect time to venture out on a midnight walk and bathe in the light of a full moon.
The witching moon is upon us: the October full moon. Of course, it isn't actually a spooky moon — but it falls in the month of October when all of the ghouls, goblins, and ghosts come out to frolic for Halloween.
Sadly, this year's October full moon doesn't fall close to Halloween. You may recall that there was one in 2020, but that sort of thing is rather rare. The next full lunar display won't take place on All Hallows' Eve until 2039, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
Why is the October full moon called the hunter moon?
The hunter moon may have derived its name from the time that people would hunt in preparation for winter. It is also referred to as the Sanguine or Blood Moon, "either associated with the blood from hunting or the turning of the leaves in autumn." The Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that Native peoples would give distinctive names to each reoccurring full moon to mark the change of seasons.
The moon will be at its fullest in Vancouver on Oct. 9 at 1:54 p.m., according to timeanddate.com.
