A man is recovering in hospital after being shot during a police incident while allegedly fleeing the scene of an alleged break-and-enter.
The incident happened around 8:45 p.m. on July 16 after a witness called police to report someone was trying to break into a building on the Downtown Eastside near Gore Avenue and Railway Street.
When the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) responded to the area a vehicle allegedly tried to flee the area. The vehicle was eventually stopped at the intersection of Commercial Drive and East 2nd Avenue.
That's where shots were fired, according to police.
"A 52-year-old man, who was armed with a gun, was injured in the interaction. He was taken to hospital where he remains in custody and under guard," they state in a press release.
They don't say who fired the shots, or how many shots were fired.
The VPD notes a police dog was injured in the interaction, but no human officers were. The dog is expected to recover.
More details won't be released at this time, the VPD notes, as the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has been called to investigate the incident given the serious injuries sustained by the man."The IIO investigation will determine who fired shots during the incident but it is reported that the man had a weapon," states the IIO in a press release. "The driver of the vehicle sustained serious gunshot-related injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment."
Video was taken by bystanders at the end of the incident.
