An overnight wind storm toppled trees and caused power outages for many Vancouverites, but who is responsible for cleaning up the fallen trees?
BC Hydro spokesperson Mora Scott tells Vancouver Is Awesome that a fallen tree is the utility's responsibility to clear only if it falls on their property, such as on a power line.
Street trees in Vancouver, however, fall under the responsibility of the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, the Park Board confirms in an email to V.I.A.
The Park Board also tells V.I.A. that currently "crews and arborists are responding to 400 high priority calls regarding downed trees and major debris from street trees," including several trees near the Stanley Park Teahouse and Second Beach parking lot.
"It could take up to two weeks to deal with [over 400] downed trees that have been reported as of mid-day today," the Park Board adds.
City of Vancouver engineering staff are also helping clear streets as well as catch basins to prevent flooding ahead of the heavy precipitation expected on Sunday (Nov. 6).
Vancouver residents are asked to call 311 to report fallen trees.
