Photos: Take a behind the scenes look at the construction of the Broadway subway tunnel

The massive project is affecting many, from commuters to businesses to residents

The Broadway Subway project is one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Canada right now, and it's happening right underneath the homes, businesses, and feet of Vancouverites.

While it took years of preparation and planning, over the last year work has been very noticeable to people, for better or worse. The street-level view hides much of what is going on underground, though, which shouldn't be too much of a surprise given a tunnel is being bored.

The Ministry of Transportation has been sharing photos of the ongoing work, though, from below the street deck, which has been installed to keep Broadway a viable transportation corridor during construction. They even shared a video of the first boring machine completing the first section of tunnel, breaking through the wall at the Mount Pleasant station site.

The photos give a rare and unusual view of the project, as a significant part of the city is dug up and transformed.

Some images are almost a cross-section of the city, like in an Eyewitness book, while others almost look like two photos photoshopped together (like the crowd waiting for Elsie to break through below street level).

These photos only represent a fraction of the work that will be done over the coming years, as the multi-billion dollar project isn't wrapping until 2026 (if all goes as planned).
