To mark Earth Day in Vancouver, local groups Protect the Planet, Fairy Creek Blockade, Save Old Growth, and Extinction Rebellion Vancouver joined together to stand against climate injustice in B.C. by marching down Cambie Street.
On Friday afternoon, people gathered at the steps of City Hall for speeches and remarks before the march got underway.
Demonstrators flooded Cambie Street, some with buckets and drum sticks, groups of people with larger banners scattered throughout the crowd and others with homemade signs all made their way to the bridge.
A commuter driving by shouted out at the protesters: “You guys are off your rocker." Because of the groups' belief in non-violent civil disobedience, mediators were on hand to make sure participants maintain calm and safe when marching. Lots of cars honked and cheered in the opposite lane as the demonstrators started to occupy the Cambie Bridge while the police blocked the roads to keep everyone safe.
The crew marched with the beat of drums leading and chants and songs from the pack. They ended at Coopers Park where the large group broke down into smaller spaces where reflection and more sharing were encouraged.
