Photos: Here's why there's a person in a hoodie sitting on Trout Lake

The small figure floating on the surface has a ghostly nature

A ghostly figure has appeared on Trout Lake, seemingly seated on the water's surface.

While it may look like a youth or small adult in a purple hoodie, it's actually a new piece by local street artist Lupo. The figure was placed there as a reminder of the ongoing overdose crisis happening in Vancouver and across the province. It's part of an ongoing series dubbed #belovedghosts; the local artist has placed dozens of figures around the city.

The art was placed on the lake on Aug. 31.

"Today is overdose awareness day. Sending all the love I can today, be safe. Be together if you can," wrote Lupon on an Aug. 31 Instagram post featuring the piece of art.

The colour purple is associated with overdose prevention efforts.

In a previous interview with V.I.A., Lupo noted he creates his #belovedghosts pieces as a way to make grief visible.

"Once I've made it and it's out there, it belongs to everyone else. This is our community, it belongs to the community as well," he explained.
