One man is in custody accused of bear spraying someone on the western edge of Burnaby’s Brentwood area.
On Saturday afternoon, a man was bear sprayed by an unknown suspect near Dawson and Gilmore, according to Burnaby RCMP.
“The suspect fled the area, then attempted to spray officers while on the run,” said a Burnaby RCMP tweet. “He was unable to hide from Air-1, not to mention a #K9Unit.”
The suspect was taken to Burnaby Hospital for a case of “dog rash” from the K-9 member, and now faces charges of assault with a weapon and more.
Police crack down on commercial vehicles
The Burnaby RCMP, along with 14 Lower Mainland agencies, came together for several months of commercial vehicle inspections.
These agencies include:

- BC Highway Patrol
Stats from Jan. 1 to June 15:
- 859 Inspections
- 487 (57%) Trucks placed out of service/removed from the roadway (contained at least 1 critical safety violation that required the commercial motor vehicle’s immediate removal from the roadway until such a time as the critical safety violation was corrected)
- 1,332 Violations identified (each violation represented a ticket worthy offence)
- 1,000 Mechanical defects identified
Our officers also came upon the following infractions during these inspections:
- 1-90 Day IRP (Immediate Roadside Prohibition)
- 1-24 hour driving prohibition for alcohol
- 2 Excessive speeding infractions
- 1 Prohibited driver (charges forwarded)
- 1 Indefinite driving prohibition issued with a 7 day vehicle impoundment
- 1 Weapon seizure
- 1 Stolen val tag
Prior to entering the roadway each day, every commercial vehicle must have a pre-trip inspection conducted on it, which falls under S. 37.22 of the MVAR.
“Commercial vehicles are essential in many aspects of our day to day lives,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj of the Burnaby RCMP, in a news release. “Along with our partners, we recognize that commercial motor vehicle enforcement is also essential in order to keep all motorists safe.”
