While the stereotypical Canadian Christmas includes a lot of snow, Vancouver tends to buck that trend.
To be an "official" white Christmas, Environment Canada says there has to be 2 cm of snow on the ground (or more) at 7 a.m. In Vancouver that happens about 10 per cent of the time, the lowest rate of any major city in Canada.
Given that snow is rare here and can cause chaos, do locals actually want a white Christmas?
In a poll run by V.I.A. recently, it seems to be a surprisingly divisive issue.
A very slight majority say they don't want a white Christmas, but it's a very slim majority. Of the 603 votes, 306 voted against snow on the ground for Dec. 25, while 297 like the idea.
It should be noted that no amount of voting will sway the weather.
Vancouver Is Awesome polled 1346 readers and asked the question: Are you hoping for a white Christmas (where Vancouver has an inch of snow on the ground Dec. 25)?
The poll ran from 12/1/2024 to 12/15/2024. Of the 1346 votes, we can determine that 603 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:
