Poll: Vancouverites concerned about privacy issues on TikTok

Are you concerned about TikTok?

Privacy concerns on Tiktok are a major concern for Vancouverites.

As governments and institutions move away from social media platform, it seems locals are also worried about privacy on TikTok.

Privacy issues around TikTok stem from the concern raised by authorities like the FBI that data collected through the social media platform could be collected by the Chinese government.

In Canada, this means that most levels of government have banned its use on government devices, including the City of Vancouver, along with the federal and provincial governments. The University of British Columbia also advised students to uninstall the app.

V.I.A. readers, it seems, are concerned as well. While the majority don't use the app, few aren't concerned; of the nearly 800 people polled, fewer than 50 said they were not concerned.

There was a bit of a divide between locals and people outside the Vancouver area. It seems fewer people in Vancouver use the app and were concerned with privacy issues around TikTok.

Vancouver Is Awesome polled 797 readers and asked the question: Are you concerned about privacy issues on TikTok?

The poll ran from 4/2/2023 to 4/7/2023. Of the 797 votes, we can determine that 404 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Yes 29.70 % local, 33.75 % total
No 11.88 % local, 13.55 % total
I don't use TikTok 57.92 % local, 52.70 % total
  Local   Total

Results are based on an online study of adult Vancouver Is Awesome readers that are located in Vancouver. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 3.47%, 19 times out of 20.

Vancouver Is Awesome uses a variety of techniques to capture data, detect and prevent fraudulent votes, detect and prevent robots, and filter out non-local and duplicate votes.
