Students at UBC have been protesting against the university's connections to Israel and for the cessation of military activities in Palestine for weeks.

One protester has been arrested at UBC according to the University RCMP detachment.

The university's Vancouver campus has been one of several across Canada with a pro-Palestinian protest encampment.

A social media post by protesters announced increased action for May 29 and called for the UBC administration to condemn actions in the embattled region.

Police were apparently aware of a planned protest event at the university; the RCMP note in a press release that officers from the Vancouver Police Department along with Mounties from the Richmond, BC Highway Patrol, and Critical Response Unit were on hand to support the University detachment.

Officers and protesters faced off at the intersection of University Boulevard and Westbrook Mall.

"Demonstrators were given the opportunity to relocate off the roadway to avoid enforcement action. Despite attempts to facilitate communication with protesters, police action was required to clear the intersection," states the police in the press release.

"One person did not comply with police direction and was arrested."

Roadways have reopened since the incident earlier today and police say they are monitoring the situation.
