Hotel Vancouver may be getting a new, very close, neighbour.
So close they'll be attached at the ballroom.
In an application to the city, a 12-storey office building is being proposed on the hotel's southern side, where an annex already exists, connected to the hotel.
The new building would include loading bays, more than 200 parking spots for vehicles (including valet parking), and another 226 spots for bikes in the lower levels.
Above that would be hotel facilities, including a new ballroom (the entrance for it would be from the existing hotel), spa, and two restaurants. Office space would fill the remaining floors.
The roof would be a green roof of a living sort, as opposed to the hotel's verdigris top (the greenish colour of the copper-covered roof).
The proposed building is a departure from the hotel's iconic features; instead, designs show a building covered in glass with a boxy nature to it. While it would be quite visible from some angles, from others it would be hidden behind the landmark hotel.
In the application published by the city in advance of potential rezoning, only renderings and designs were included; no rationale is included in the package.
