A man has been captured on video hitting a car with a hammer and spitting at a driver in an alleged road rage incident on a Vancouver street.
A witness who was filming, and asked to remain anonymous, told the Courier the violent outburst happened about 3:30pm on Friday, August 31 at East 33rd Avenue and a few blocks east of Fraser Street.
In the video, posted on Reddit in the r/Vancouver page under the headline ‘Drunk idiot goes RAGE mode in Vancouver, BC!’, the man can be seen yelling at the driver of a green mini-van.
“F*** you buddy. F*** you. You want to act tough?” he can be heard saying.
He then continues to yell in a condescending tone: “Are you a tough guy? Are you a tough guy?” while leaning closer into the window of the van.
The video does not suggest what sparked the man’s rage, which continues for about 40 seconds.
In the background, another man can be heard trying to diffuse the situation.
“It’s all good guys, it’s all good. Let’s just get home guys, let’s just get home. It’s okay man,” he says.
“It’s not worth it man, it’s not worth it.”
But the man doesn’t take the advice and continues the abuse, before he appears to spit in the driver’s face.
He then aggressively hits the front of the green van with his hammer. The profanity continues until he gets back into his truck and drives away.
In comments on Reddit, the person who posted the video, assured people the police were contacted.
“There were so many witnesses, don’t know what this guy was thinking,” he wrote.
“Luckily no one was seriously hurt.
“It looked like he spit in the van driver’s face.
“Seeing that was the worst part.”
The witness said he did not see what started the incident.
“Whatever did cause it; I don’t think it justifies someone assaulting [spitting] and damaging [hammer] property," he told the Courier on Saturday.
"To be fair, never know what the van driver did to provoke the man with the hammer.
“That being said, the driver in the white truck was in front and could’ve kept on with his day but decided to stop and get out.”
