Emergency crews respond to a road-rage incident on Highway 1 in Burnaby Wednesday.

A road-rage incident on Highway 1 in Burnaby has further snarled traffic already backed up after a fatal pedestrian-involved collision earlier this morning.

Police were called to the westbound lanes of the highway between Douglas Road and Willingdon Avenue shortly after 11:30 a.m., according to Burnaby RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Cunningham.

He said police believe two male drivers got out of their vehicles and entered into a physical altercation.

One man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Cunningham, and the second man fled the scene.

“It definitely contributed to an already bad traffic problem,” he said of the incident.

Cunningham said it’s too early to tell whether the traffic congestion caused by the earlier accident sparked the road-rage altercation but Burnaby RCMP is investigating.

At about 8:30 a.m., a pedestrian attempting to cross the highway by the Willingdon Avenue overpass was struck by a passenger vehicle.

The pedestrian died at the scene.
