The winter storm that brought several centimetres of snow to Metro Vancouver overnight has led to widespread school closures across the region on Wednesday (Jan. 17).
Announcements from each public school district in the Lower Mainland began rolling out in the 6 a.m. hour, and one of the first to call off classes today was the Vancouver School Board.
"All Vancouver School Board schools are closed today due to weather conditions. After careful consideration, the superintendent decided to close all schools today," notes the VSB website.
The following school districts have announced closures for Wednesday, January 17, 2024:

- Coquitlam/Port Coquitlam/Port Moody - SD 43
- Delta - SD 37
- Langley - SD 35
- Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows SD 42

- North Vancouver - SD 44
- Richmond - SD 38
- Surrey - SD 36
- Vancouver - SD 39
- West Vancouver - SD 45
Vancouver private school closures
- Crofton House School
- Little Flower Academy
- St. George's Senior School
- St. John's School
- Stratford Hall School
- Vancouver College
- York House School
Post-secondary school closures
- BCIT - All in-person classes and exams are cancelled – including full-time and Flexible Learning classes. Online courses are not impacted.
- Emily Carr - Classes are cancelled, and there is no access to campus.
- Capilano University - Main campus, Lonsdale, kálax-ay and Squamish campuses are all closed Wednesday, January 17 due to winter weather conditions. Faculty will advise students of alternate plans for classes.
- Kwantlen Polytechnic University - All in-person classes and in-person services are cancelled today (Jan 17). Online classes will continue as scheduled.
- Langara College - The campus at 601 West Broadway is closed. All on-campus classes are cancelled; online classes will continue remotely. Employees are advised to work remotely
- SFU - All in-person SFU activities are cancelled. Campus buildings remain open on all SFU campuses, but the libraries and Lorne Davies Sports Complex will be closed and all in-person classes, labs, university services and campus activities are cancelled for the entire day. All online classes will proceed as scheduled. SFU Burnaby Residence and Housing front desk and the Dining Commons remain open.
- Trinity Western - Langley campus is open for essential services only and classes will not be delivered in person. Check your course Moodle site for the latest information on how to access your class. Richmond campus Lansdowne and Minoru sites are closed, with all classes moved online.
- UBC - UBC is cancelling in-person learning activities on the Vancouver campus for all of Jan. 17. Classes may move online.
- University of the Fraser Valley - All UFV campuses are closed to students and employees, except designated winter services personnel.
- Vancouver Community College - VCC campuses are closed and all on-campus classes are cancelled. Online classes and college operations will continue remotely.
