A youth called 911 after a suspect broke into his home and hid under a table.

The incident occurred on Saturday, Sept. 24 at about 8:30 p.m.

“Officers rushed to the scene, and spoke to the youth that was in the home,” said a NWPD press release. “The youth shared that he took a video of the suspect before scaring him away.”

Thanks to the evidence the teen provided police, the officers were able to identify a suspect and make an arrest later that night.

“We want to commend this young person for their thoughtfulness and bravery,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom. “Calling 911 and capturing video of the suspect were instrumental in allowing police to identify a suspect and make an arrest.”

The New Westminster Police Department reminds parents and guardians to talk to their children about the importance of knowing when and how to dial 911. It notes that E-Comm has helpful information on how to teach kids about using 911 at www.tinyurl.com/911InfoForKids.

James Wood, a 63-year-old New Westminster resident, has been charged with one count of breaking and entering. At this time, the suspect remains in custody.
