Famed stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan had some nice things to say about Vancouver recently, though the Canadian-U.S. relationship is strained.
On the We Might Be Drunk podcast (hosted by comedians Mark Normand and Sam Morril), Gaffigan spoke about being an American in Canada after U.S. President Donald Trump levied tariffs and questioned Canada's future sovereignty.
He was in Vancouver in early April for four stand-up shows. On the podcast, after the topic of Canadian anger towards the U.S. comes up, Gaffigan talks about a joke he tells with a dog telling him to shoot the president.
"By the way, those audiences in Vancouver were amazing," he says.
"I'm going there soon, I love Vancouver," notes Morril.
Gaffigan goes on to talk about the different responses between American, Canadian, and European audiences to jokes. In the past, he notes, Canadians were usually more forgiving of Americans than other countries.
"Now the Canadians are like 'We hate you,'" Gaffigan says. "They're furious."
Normand and Morril agree.
Gaffigan then talks about going to a whisky bar in Vancouver that has drinks from around the world.
"I like bourbon, and so I'm like 'I'm going to get a bourbon,'" explains Gaffigan, who has helped create a bourbon brand. "No bourbon. I go 'This is a world whisky bar.' And they're like 'No, we're not selling any American whisky.'"
He explains that eventually he went back to his hotel and was able to get a bourbon. The trio also discuss the trade issues between Canada and the U.S. (from the point of view of comedians).
Gaffigan has spent a fair amount of time in Vancouver. During a 2018 special, he spoke about Vancouver and tweeted about the weather.
