New numbers released by TransLink show that its Tap-to-Pay system was used over one million times since it launched on May 22.
“When we make it easier to take transit, everyone wins,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond in a news release. “Some of the million Tap-to-Pay taps over the last two months are from people who might have paid cash. Some are from people who might not have otherwise used transit. We’re always looking for ways to make transit the most convenient option.”
Transit riders can pay their adult fare by tapping their Visa, Mastercard or mobile wallet at the fare gates or on buses. The system is meant to serve occasional riders and tourists while frequent transit users use their Compass Cards.
TransLink was the first transit operator in Canada to launch this new payment option, which has been used over a million times by 160,000 unique users.
“Transit has always been a great way to get to a Whitecaps game,” says Vancouver Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. “The Tap-to-Pay system makes it even easier for our fans to avoid lineups and just hop on SkyTrain after enjoying the action and great atmosphere at our games.”
