A proposed building on Kingsway will bring 127 rental units to Joyce-Collingwood area.
Designs submitted to the city show a six-storey triangular building at 2970 Kingsway, a triangular piece of property at the intersection with Rupert Street. It's been vacant for at least a decade, but was sold earlier this year according to B.C. Assessment.
Along with new rental homes the building would have commercial retail space on the ground level and parking. There would also be communal areas on top, with bbq and dining areas, fire pits and an area for dogs.
Due to Kingsway's unusual diagonal path across the city, properties along the road often have unusual shapes. In this case the architects have designed a triangular building to cover the maximum amount of land.
"The proposal seeks to provide much needed affordable Secured Market Rental housing aligned with the City of Vancouver's Housing and Homelessness strategy on a site which is well served by many transit options, as well as multiple parks, schools, amenities, and commercial retail, all within short walking distance," states the development team in the rezoning application. "At present, the site is vacant and fenced, but it presents a unique opportunity to create an appropriate, yet dramatic, mixed-use building that integrates with the urban and community fabric in a responsive, liveable, and engaging manner."
