A parachutist who was stuck on the Stawamus Chief is now safe and sound.

Squamish Search and Rescue flew in via helicopter to assist the man.

A rescuer rappelled down the side of the Chief and strapped him to a rope, and crews are now raising him up to the helicopter’s landing spot.

The parachutist has no serious injuries and is conscious and speaking, said Landon James, manager with Squamish Search and Rescue.

The Sea to Sky Highway was closed in the early afternon order to make way for rescuers but has since reopened.

Traffic delays are still to be expected, though.
