Firefighters have blocked traffic along a Vancouver street due to a fire that broke out in an abandoned house.

The Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) responded to a second-alarm fire in the 1200 block of 7th Avenue near Clark Drive around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 5).

Thirty-four firefighters and eight fire trucks were dispatched to the scene and it took them about 20 minutes to get the flames knocked down, VFRS Acting Assistant Chief of Operations Brad Hesse told V.I.A.

When crews arrived there was heavy smoke coming out of the three-story, boarded-up home and they located the fire in the basement. However, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

There were no injuries and the blaze did not spread to other buildings.

Firefighters attend many calls to abandoned structures and they can be particularly dangerous because part of the home is already torn down.

The VFRS is asking people to avoid the immediate area and has closed off 7th Avenue roughly one block west of Clark.
