Fire temporarily shuts down popular Vancouver restaurant

"We appreciate our community," shared the grateful business operators.

Vancouver firefighters battled a blaze in a commercial building in Mount Pleasant.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services Asst. Chief Ken Gemmill told V.I.A. that fire crews were dispatched to the 200 block of East 6th Avenue off Main Street to a working fire in an old, three-storey building with a brick facade.

Six fire trucks and 24 firefighters were dispatched to the scene and are currently battling a blaze that they believe started in the restaurant Bar Susu, Gemmill explained.

The building has been evacuated and no injuries were reported but firefighters are in the process of searching suites above the restaurant to see if there is anyone inside.

Main Street remained open to traffic but fire crews closed off a portion of 6th Ave.

The team at Bar Susu provided the following statement to V.I.A.: “Today, there was a fire inside the basement of the building Bar Susu is located in. We are thankful for the immediate attention by Vancouver firefighters and glad no one was hurt. Due to the fire, Bar Susu will need to close for about a week, but we’ll be up and running again soon. Thanks to everyone for checking in on us! We appreciate our community.”

The Michelin-recommended Bar Susu opened in 2022 in the historic building formerly home to The Whip. Recently, the bar/restaurant was named one of Canada's 50 best bars of 2023.
