Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver as a moisture-laden system moves into the region.
In a statement, the federal forecasting department states that heavy rainfall will continue over Howe Sound and Metro Vancouver today. Tonight, rainfall will spread to the Fraser Valley.
This system will deliver 40-70 mm of rain by Thursday morning.
The rainfall warning is in effect for:
- Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
- Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
- Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
- Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
- Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta
By Thursday, the rainfall is expected to decrease, but the persistent moist, onshore flow will cause showers, heavy at times, to continue. The heaviest rain amounts are expected near the mountains and eastern sections of the Fraser Valley.

This evening's forecast also calls for strong winds that will continue into Thursday morning. There is also a risk of thunderstorms through the night.
Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Environment Canada advises you to watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
