Vancouver's wet weather will continue, and even spike, over the next 24 hours.
A special weather statement has been issued for Metro Vancouver, while North Vancouver and West Vancouver are under a rainfall warning due to heavy precipitation expected tonight, Nov. 12.
Environment Canada meteorologist Nan Lu says North Vancouver could see up to 50 mm of rainfall overnight, while the city of Vancouver is likely to see up to 25 mm.
"In the northeastern section, which includes Pitt Meadows and Coquitlam, that region could receive anywhere from 30 to 40 mm," she adds.
The heavy rains are part of a relatively typical frontal system rolling in off the Pacific.
"We're still seeing showers Sunday, with steady rain to come in this evening," she explains. Along with the rain, there will be winds. For areas nearest the ocean, gusts could reach 70 km/h. Inland, it's expected the strongest winds will peak at 50 km/h.
The wind and rain should ease on Monday, Nov. 11. Temperatures throughout the stormy period should sit between 9 C and 12 C, day and night.
"It's just a typical late fall, winter storm," she adds. "The usual November rain storm."
Weather forecast for Nov. 11 morning and Remembrance Day ceremonies in Metro Vancouver
The system should have moved east, passing over Metro Vancouver before Remembrance Day ceremonies start.
"It looks like around 11 a.m. most of the steady rain should have moved east into the Fraser Valley region," Lu explains.
However, it won't clear up after the storm; Lu says people outside Monday around 11 a.m. should plan for showers.
Lu notes that through the entire afternoon there's going to be a chance of lightning and thunder due to the instability created by the frontal system. She notes that it shouldn't be a large thunderstorm; it should only be a few strikes.
"There's a very slight risk over the whole afternoon, possibly over the mountains," she says. "In the wake of the system, the atmosphere will be slightly unstable."
Another, bigger storm looms
After Monday calms down Tuesday, Nov. 12 should be grey with a chance of showers through the day. However, another night storm is coming.
"After this system, another strong system is coming across the south coast Tuesday night," says Lu.
She says more rain and stronger winds are currently forecast as part of the Tuesday night system.
"We may have more warnings with the Tuesday night system," she adds.
To prepare for the increased rain Lu suggests people clear storm drains to help ease any localized flooding. Drivers should also prepare for standing water on roads.
Beyond Tuesday night, it doesn't look like there are any immediate storms, but the rest of the week will likely remain gray and damp.
