Ever hummed a song while waiting for a bus?
Gord Buster is a local system administrator with a penchant for comedy, music, and performance. He's turned that into more than a decade of producing parody videos and other internet content.
Most recently, he turned waiting in a bus line to a song in the tune of Toto's "Hold the Line" from 1978.
"It's not in the way that you sit on the bench," he sings at the opening. "It's not in the way you smell that stench — ewwwww."
He says the inspiration came when he was, as one might expect, waiting in line for the bus, and the classic rock song came on his playlist.
"Sometimes you're not listening to the music and you're listening to half the words and piecing in what your subconscious is thinking about," Buster says.
It only took him about 30 minutes to write the lyrics, but putting the video together took another six months. It also meant going to the bus stop at 5 a.m. to get the shots while not being run over by buses.
"I like the lyrics because you're trying to subvert people's expectations but also meet them," he explains.
In the video, there are some jokes a little more subtle than others, like the imitation of the guitar solo from the original Toto video.
"Maybe no one will ever get it, but I like that little nugget," Buster says.
Making videos for years
Originally from the small B.C. town of Cherryville, which is outside of Lumby (which is outside of Vernon), Buster and his twin have been making videos for years, including wrestling-style promo videos - something he thinks everyone should do, as a sort of affirmation.
"It's not me cheering myself on, it's Macho Man Randy Savage," he explains.
Buster has also done a series of videos where he's removed the "fluff" from game shows. Essentially he removed all the excess chatter in game shows like America's Got Talent, Deal or No Deal and The Price is Right, whittling them down from up to an hour down to just a few minutes.
Future Songs
He's planning a few more songs, with parodies of Ozzy Osbourne, Tears for Fears, and Don Henley in the works.
Buster is also on stage as a local stand-up comedian; he'll be at Comedy Vinyl in the new year.
