Police-involved shooting in Vancouver park leaves one man dead

The IIO BC police watchdog is currently investigating a police-involved shooting at an East Vancouver park that left one man dead.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) has been called on to Vancouver following a police-involved incident. 

A spokesperson for the IIO BC confirmed with V.I.A. over the phone Saturday morning (Aug. 5) that the agency was deployed to Clinton Park in East Vancouver where there was a police presence. 

According to a news release by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), police notified the IIO BC after an 18-year-old man died in a police-involved shooting Saturday morning. 

Officers responded around 2:15 a.m. to a report of gunshot sounds near the playground at Clifton Park near Grant and Penticton streets. 

Upon arrival, officers encountered a man with a firearm. Shots were fired and the suspect was shot by police. 

The suspect was taken to hospital where he subsequently passed away.

No police officers were injured and no victims related to the initial report have been located.

The IIO BC is currently investigating the police-involved shooting.
