A Vancouver police officer faces charges of assault with a weapon, attempting to obstruct justice and dangerous driving in connection with the arrest of a shoplifting suspect in May 2019.
On Tuesday (April 6), the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) announced that the charges have been approved against Vancouver Police Cst. Jonathan Kempton in connection with the arrest of a shoplifting suspect on May 9, 2019 in Vancouver.
Cst. Kempton is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, one count of attempting to obstruct justice, and one count of dangerous driving.
The charges were approved by an experienced Crown Counsel with no prior or current connection with the officer.
VPD spokesperson Cst. Tania Visintin tells Vancouver Is Awesome that Kempton "is still on active duty but his employment status is being reviewed."
Kempton is scheduled to appear in provincial court on May 4.
