A serious collision Wednesday afternoon in East Vancouver left a Vancouver Police officer injured, and now the department is hoping witnesses to the incident can come forward.
While conducting speed enforcement by New Brighton Park on McGill Street east of Renfrew Street at around 3 p.m. July 27, an officer observed a brown Toyota Corolla travelling at 96 kilometres per hour in a 50 kilometre per hour zone, described the VPD in a media release.
When the officer signalled for the driver in question to pull over, the driver instead sped up and drove at the officer.
“Our member fell onto the roadway while trying to get out of the way of the suspect’s vehicle, but was hit by the front bumper of that vehicle,” explained Constable Tania Visintin, VPD. “The officer was taken to hospital that night. He has since been released and will be recovering at home.”
However, the driver didn't get far - he was taken into custody at the scene.
Charges for assaulting a police officer with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and excessive speed have been recommended against him, added the VPD.
