The Vancouver Public Library (VPL) is reopening several of its branches to the public tomorrow, July 14.
For the first time since the library shut down in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, library users will be able to access computers, borrow and return library materials and pick up holds from five of the library's locations.
The Central Library is one site reopening Tuesday as the VPL kicks off Phase 2 of its restart plan, alongside the library's Britannia, Kitsilano, Renfrew and South Hill branches. The VPL first began accepting book returns on July 7.
Library users are encouraged to limit their visits to 30 minutes or less, in order to allow others to enjoy the branch, and to search the VPL's online catalogue before their visit to see what is available at their preferred branch. The VPL also suggests making a list of books you might like to borrow, and noting those books' call numbers beforehand.
The library also encourages visitors to limit their orders and pickups to once a week, in an effort to support physical distancing. Expanded takeout service for holds is available at five additional locations, as well. Takeout service will run Tuesdays to Saturdays at Champlain Heights, Dunbar, Firehall, Hastings and Kensington branches, and must be scheduled in advance.
Those needing to use a computer can make appointments on-site at reopened branches, the library noted on its website.
Library users might notice a few changes to their local branch, including new signage and layouts, as well as hand sanitizer available at entrances. Visitors will be required to keep two metres distance between themselves and other library users. In-person programs and events, as well as reading and studying, continue to be suspended.
The library asks anyone feeling ill or experiencing flu-like symptoms to stay home. Anyone displaying COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms, for example, a persistent cough, will not be permitted inside any of the library's locations.
