The Economist Intelligence Unit released the results of a survey of 172 cities in its 2024 Global Liveability Ranking and Vancouver, B.C. is in the top 10.

Vancouver has ranked among the world's most liveable cities.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released the results of a survey of 172 cities worldwide in its 2024 Global Liveability Ranking.

The EIU assigns a rating to each city based on "relative comfort" in 30 factors across five broad categories, including stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Each factor in a city is rated as "acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable."

Vienna remains the world's most liveable city for the third consecutive year. The Austrian capital received perfect scores in four of five categories. It scored 93.5 out of 100 in culture and environment due to "a lack of major sporting events."

Three other western European cities made the top 10. Copenhagen, Denmark, and Zurich, Switzerland landed in second and third. Melbourne, Australia placed fourth.

Two Canadian cities make the top 10 liveable cities ranking

A second Swiss city, Geneva, tied for fifth with the highest-ranking Canadian city, Calgary.

Another Aussie city, Sydney, tied for seventh with Vancouver.

Osaka, Japan tied for ninth with Auckland, New Zealand.

The EIU says Australia's two ranking cities, Sydney and Melbourne, ranked worse this year due to poor housing availability. The company says Toronto also dropped out of the 10 to rank 12th for similar reasons.

On the other end of the spectrum, Damascus in Syria placed last in 173. Tripoli, Libya placed just ahead in 172, with Algiers, Algeria in 171.
