Carousel Theatre for Young People is receiving abuse over a drag summer camp and has been forced to raise funds for security.

Carousel Theatre for Young People offers a variety of summer camps but one in particular has forced the organization to take security precautions.

In addition to drama and improv, Carousel offers a drag summer camp for kids and teens which they say received "a barrage of hate," not just online but in person.

"People have shown up at the office with cameras, handing out horrifying flyers and spewing hate at the employees who work there," says Carousel in a statement posted to GoFund Me. "At its height, certain staff members were receiving over 100 emails a day, harassing them and spewing abuse."

They have also received reports that there is a rally planned for July 4 and in response to the threat, the theatre is conducting a fundraiser to help them hire security to keep the children and staff safe.

"I feel that this money would be better spent on artist and admin wages, props, costumes, set pieces, feather boas, crowns, glitter... the list goes on and on," reads the statement.

The security will cost $8000 and any additional money raised will go toward more drag camps which Carousel calls "a silver lining."

In general, the theatre company has been quiet on social media which they say is a move as to not provoke more hate. However, they have posted a drag camp FAQ in the hopes of clearing up some of the misinformation spreading online.

"The irony is that the hate coming from these few is being overpowered by an immense love for this company," the statement continues. "If only the haters knew how much more support Carousel has now."

Within 24 hours of posting the GoFund Me, Carousel surpassed its goal of $8000 and has a new goal of $18000. The additional funds will be put towards "diverse, inclusive, and entertaining programming," according to an update.

V.I.A. has reached out to VPD to ask for more information regarding the threat to the safety of children and workers at Carousel.
