For the second year in a row, the coronavirus pandemic has cancelled yet another holiday tradition for Vancouver.
After 16 years of kicking off the holiday season with marching bands, choirs, floats and community groups performing for 300,000 people, the parade was first cancelled in 2020. Earlier this month parade organizers announced the parade would not go ahead this year either.
“Due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic, the Vancouver Santa Claus Parade will not be held in 2021,” organizers wrote in a social media post. “We look forward to returning in 2022, when we can better ensure the health and safety of everyone involved.”
While the parade won’t take place this year, locals are encouraged to continue supporting the parade’s benefactors including the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, and the CKNW Kids' Fund.
