Vancouver police are still seeking witnesses of a June 5 killing, though one man is already facing homicide charges in the case.
Wataru Kakiuchi, a popular chef at a local Japanese restaurant, was found around 3:30 a.m. by police after being stabbed during an altercation near the intersection of Main and Union streets. He died a short time later.
Timothy Isborn was arrested and charged in the case a few days later and a court date is coming up.
A pretrial conference has been set for Oct. 4 with Isborn returning to court Oct. 17 to confirm a date for a preliminary inquiry. Such inquiries are held to determine if enough evidence exists to go to trial. They are covered by a statutory publication ban to ensure any potential jury pool has no prior facts of the case before trial.
Who was in the SUV?
The Vancouver Police Department is still looking for witnesses, specifically the driver and any occupants of a vehicle that drove through the area around the time of the incident.
"Whoever was in this vehicle may have important information about the murder, and we’re asking them come forward," says Sgt. Steve Addison in a press release.
Video footage and stills have been released in an effort to identify the vehicle and find the potential witnesses inside.
"Investigators have yet to identify the occupants of an SUV that was seen travelling through the area before the murder. Police believe the driver or passengers may have witnessed an altercation, but did not come forward because they were not aware it was related to the homicide," reads a press release from the VPD.
The SUV was caught on security footage travelling south on Main Street around 2:30 a.m. on June 5, before stopping at the light at the intersection with Union. It ended up turning right on the Dunsmuir Viaduct and headed into the city.
