The Vancouver Police Department is replacing its gas-powered vehicles with 20 electric Ford Focus hatchbacks.
The new unmarked electric vehicles will be equipped with sirens and emergency lights for use by detectives and administrative staff, according to a release.
“We are taking steps to reduce emissions, and are adopting zero emission vehicles where they match our needs,” said Rob Rothwell, VPD fleet manager.
The VPD has installed 22 charging stations in partnership with the City of Vancouver and said the new cars complement its existing green fleet, which consists of two pure electric vehicles, 12 hybrid vehicles and two electric motorcycles.
“These new electric vehicles will positively impact Vancouver by reducing both air pollution and greenhouse gases. The VPD are an important part of the City’s Green Fleet Strategy to reduce fleet emissions by 50 per cent by 2030," said Doug Smith, the city's director of sustainability.
