Vancouver police are seeking the driver of an SUV after they struck and killed a dog and injured a woman.
On Aug. 20 at around 1 p.m., Becca McMeekin was out walking her dog Tobi, a one-year-old Corgi-Pomeranian, at the intersection of East Pender Street and Garden Drive.
"As they were crossing the intersection, a grey SUV quickly approached from East Hastings," state the police. "The vehicle made a left turn onto East Pender Street running over the dog and making contact with the woman in the crosswalk."
The driver didn't stop and continued on towards Nanaimo Street, according to police.
“Based on the information collected so far, there is no question the driver of the SUV knew he hit the dog and its owner,” says VPD Const. Jason Doucette in a press release. “Luckily the owner suffered only minor injuries, but the loss of one-and-a-half-year-old Tobi has been devastating for the family.”
Police believe the vehicle is a Jeep Patriot and have released a still image of the suspect SUV.
In a previous interview with Vancouver Is Awesome McMeekin and her partner say she made eye contact with the driver, who had his windows open, as the driver approached.
"We looked both ways," recalled McMeekin. "He came out of nowhere and I just remember thinking, is he going to stop? And then by the time he had hit me, I could hear my dog under his car."
