A wayward sheep is back in its pen after roaming through its Nanaimo neighbourhood Tuesday morning and knocking two children down.
The youngsters had minor, soft-tissue injuries, said Namaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien.
He said the sheep escaped about 11:30 a.m. from a hole in fencing at a hobby farm on Grandom Place in the South Wellington area.
The sheep is a two-year-old named Moses.
With a daycare nearby, the operator happened to be taking a preschool-aged boy and girl for a walk at the same time Moses was roaming free, O’Brien said.
“It rammed the three of them, knocked the kids over,” he said. “The kids were crying, the woman was hysterical.
“It was sort of a standoff for a bit. Other people got involved until the owner eventually arrived and corraled the sheep.”
The owner got Moses back in his pen and secured the hole with rope.
The incident appears to be “a one-off,” O’Brien said.
“The sheep isn’t considered violent,” he said. “It was bottle-fed as a baby.”
Police took no further action.
“There’s no concerns with the daycare being in proximity to it,” O’Brien said. “The owner’s very responsible, she was quite remorseful and we’ll move on from here.”
