Confirming the speculation around his resignation, B.C. Greens leader Andrew Weaver has called for his party to initiate a leadership contest.
In a statement released today he noted that “It is after a great deal of thought and reflection that I am announcing today that I will not be seeking another term as MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head,” and that "I am making this announcement now so that the party has enough time to start the process of electing a new leader in preparation for the next provincial election."
There was no mention of his health but last month Weaver was diagnosed with labyrinthitis, an inner ear disorder. At the time he said he was reducing his workload and limiting his appearance at public events.
The party will convene later this month to start the wheels in motion to choose a new leader, and Weaver will retain his seat in the legislature.
Sat Harwood, chair of the Provincial Council of the B.C. Greens, is quoted in the release as saying “I expect the leadership contest will culminate at the party’s 2020 convention to be held in Nanaimo from June 26-28, but details regarding the leadership contest, including a launch date, will be released in the coming weeks and months as they are approved by Provincial Council.”
The next provincial election happens on October 16th, 2021.
