Photos: Off-grid oceanfront Gulf Island home selling for less than an average Vancouver house

It's an unusual home in the forest by the shore

There's an unusual oceanfront home less than 40 km from Vancouver selling for $1.5 million.

While most waterfront houses in the area are selling for millions, the property, nicknamed Dreamcatcher, is selling for about the same as a basic entry-level home in Vancouver.

The unique home is on Ruxton Island, one of the southern Gulf Islands between Nanaimo and Metro Vancouver; it's only about 38 km from UBC.

There are a variety of features that make it unique; perhaps most eye-catching is the large, round tower-like section on one side of the main structure. It has two main floors that act as living rooms with large views of the ocean (the top is more akin to a large storage closet).

Vying for the most eye-catching are all the red roofs and trim; not only is the main house covered by bright red roofs, but so are all the outbuildings (and there are several). Among the extra buildings is a round outhouse, a little round stone structure, and an additional cabin.

There's also a stacked stone wall, and a gate that appears to be made out of woven driftwood or branches.

Currently, the house is set up with plenty of space for books. Bookshelves can be seen in almost every photo of the interior, and each one is packed.

Also inside are several unusual staircases, including multiple spiral cases and at least one that drops from the ceiling.

Dreamcatcher is off the grid and includes a freshwater collection system, solar panels, and more to keep it running. There's also a dock; Ruxton Island doesn't have any BC Ferries service.
