Think of it like tiny houses meets your favourite Swedish DIY furniture store: A B.C. company that makes pre-fab cabins that are delivered by helicopter and you assemble yourself. And with a base price of $55,000, they could be Vancouver's most affordable housing.
Meet The Backcountry Hut Company. Founded just two years ago, Backcountry teamed up with Vancouver's award-winning Leckie Studio architecture firm to come up with their "surf shack"-style modular huts suited for installation in remote areas, which they say is "something that most backcountry enthusiasts romanticize over."
Vancouverites will recognize Leckie's word in spaces like Yaletown's Small Victory bakery and cafe, or La Taqueria's taco shops. Other ventures include Slack's sleek Vancouver offices.
While "pre-fab" might bring to mind something cheap and lacking curb appeal, the Architizer award-winning Backcountry huts are meticulously designed with customer input, and were created with outdoor enthusiasts and organizations in mind.

And, yes, they were inspired by IKEA, according to Architizer.
In the kits are all you need to grab your fellow outdoorspeople and have something like an old school "barn raising," to use the pulley and winch method to get the hut assembled. Easy breezy.

Since we aren't all able to order up a cabin to plop down on our getaway property, Backcountry offers a similar Tiny Home-styled product for us city folk in their "frontcountry" line.
Prices start at $55,000 for their base 10x10 studio, plus a retainer fee. Just add land. Which, unfortunately, in the Vancouver "frontcountry" can get pretty pricey.
