A run-down house in downtown Port Coquitlam that’s frequented by squatters will be razed.
The property, located at 2224 Mary Hill Rd., is “both unsafe and a nuisance,” city staff say and, on Tuesday, city council ordered that the home be torn down.
Vacant since 2010, the small dilapidated house has had problems with garbage, debris, rodents, needles and campers, sparking 22 calls for city service since 2008.
According to a city report, the owner was asked to clean up the property by March 21 but has yet to comply.
“Although some work has been completed by the owner, the property remains vacant, unsightly and in a state of disrepair. The owner advises that cost of remediation or demolition is delaying action on the property,” the report states.
“The unsightly dwelling at 2224 Mary Hill Rd. is considered to be both unsafe and a nuisance to the neighbourhood,” the report further states.
The property was recently listed on MLS for $1.5 million but it is no longer listed.
The owner has been told that the municipality intends to proceed with a remedial order for demolition, with council’s approval.
And if the property owner doesn’t comply within 30 days, the city will tear down the building and charge the owner. If the demolition invoice isn’t paid, the cost will be added to the annual tax bill.
