SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM, Austria (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin returns to action at the Alpine skiing world championships on Saturday in her strongest event, the slalom. Austria's Raphael Haaser ended Swiss domination of the men's races by winning the giant slalom on Friday. What are the Alpine skiing world championships?
Known as the skiing worlds, the championships are held every other year at different Alpine resorts. This year’s 13-day competition is being held in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in the Austrian state of Salzburg.
There are 11 medal events this year: the four traditional events of super-G, downhill, giant slalom and slalom for both women and men; a team parallel race; and new team combined events for women and men.
Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each event.
The competition is being held exactly a year before the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.
The women's slalom is next
After sitting out Thursday's GS, four-time slalom champion Shiffrin is aiming for her record 16th career medal from the worlds, four days after she took gold with Breezy Johnson in the team combined.
American teammate Paula Moltzan arrives at the slalom fresh from winning GS bronze, which was her first individual medal from a major event.
Croatia's Zrinka Ljutic and Switzerland's Camille Rast have been dominating the World Cup slalom races in December and January during Shiffrin's absence following an abdominal injury.
